The Herne Hill Society and staff and students at The Charter School North Dulwich have worked together for the past two years on the 'Remembering Herne Hill 1914-18’ research project.

The project was awarded £5,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) First World War: Then and Now programme and the aim was to tell the story of all those from from the area who served in the First World War, as well as the experiences of non-combatants.

As a direct result of this project, Sunday 10 November saw the unveiling of the first permanent memorial to commemorate Herne Hill residents who lost their lives in the Great War. The event was well attended by local residents, politicians, staff and students.

The school was represented at the ceremony by Year 13 Jessie Ross who read and excerpt from Philip Larkin's MCMXIV, while fellow Year 13 student, Walter Feeney, played the last post to signal the start of the two minutes silence at 11am.
