This October, our school hosted a vibrant series of events to celebrate Black History Month, with a focus on the theme “Reclaiming Narratives” and exploring what this means for Black Britons today. The celebrations, thoughtfully planned and led by a dedicated team of sixth formers, aimed to educate, inspire, and engage the entire school community.
Throughout the month, assemblies and tutor times were devoted to discussions on reclaiming Black stories, exploring how these narratives challenge stereotypes and redefine identities. These sessions encouraged thought-provoking conversations among students and staff alike.
Highlights of the month included a variety of exciting events:
- Essay Competition: Students were invited to reflect on the theme through the question, “How does reclaiming Black stories challenge stereotypes?” This competition sparked meaningful exploration of identity, history, and representation.
- Raffle: A school-wide raffle added an element of fun while raising awareness for the cause.
- Afro-Caribbean Food Sale: On Wednesday, 9 October, students enjoyed a lunchtime sale featuring delicious Afro-Caribbean dishes, celebrating the rich and diverse flavors of the culture.
- Cultural Fashion Show and Own Clothes Day: On Friday, 18 October, the school came alive with vibrant colours and styles during the Cultural Fashion Show. Students showcased traditional and modern clothing that highlighted the beauty and diversity of Black heritage.
The celebrations will continue into November with the ‘Black Stars’ Event on 22nd November, shining a spotlight on the broad and exceptional talents of our students!
All funds raised from the celebrations will support two charities:
- The Amos Bursary, which helps young British people of Caribbean and African heritage excel in education and beyond.
- The Sickle Cell Society, supporting those affected by sickle cell disorder, a condition common among people of African or Caribbean heritage.
